On 05/24/2015 the CDAO appealed to our State Legislative representatives to Save The Crabbing Dock At Winchester Bay.
Dear Senator Roblan and Representatives Gomberg and McKeown. it has been a year since this matter was brought to your attention and to the attention of the responsible party, the Douglas County Department of Parks and Recreation. The result of our inquiry is the continued deterioration of the structural integrity of the Coast Guard crabbing dock at Winchester Bay. To date the Douglas County Parks and Recreation has ignored the deteriorating structural integrity of the crabbing dock. The failing condition of the crabbing dock is in sharp contrast to the repair of the crabbing dock at the Empire Boat Launch. This crabbing dock received a considerable amount of damage from a winter storm but was quickly repaired. The crabbing dock at Winchester Bay is far to valuable to loose. We are requesting that either Senator Roblan and/or Representative Mckeown use your influence to restore the structural integrity to the crabbing dock at Winchester Bay. FYI, the Coast Guard crabbing dock is a structural icon to Oregon's crabbing community. People come from all over Oregon to crab from the Coast Guard dock at Winchester Bay.
Thank you for your consideration, William Lackner for the Clam Diggers Association of Oregon.

Thank you William. I will share your position with Senator Roblan. This appears to be a Douglas County issue. We will begin with the elected officials within the County Commissioners office. Rosie Shatkin Legislative Policy Advisor

Dear Mr. Lackner,
Many thanks for taking the time to email Sen. Roblan about the crabbing dock in Winchester Bay. Douglas County has, in our FY 2015 budget, funding to do an engineering study of the dock in order to approximate the scope of repairs that are needed, the cost of repairing it and, if the structure is repairable, a potential time line for the project. We will need to get grant funding to cover the cost of repairs.
Would the Clam Diggers Association be willing to participate in funding the project?
Susan Morgan, Douglas County Commissioner

Dear Commissioner Morgan, it is gratifying to see that Douglas County officials are taking corrective measures to save the crabbing dock at Winchester Bay. It would be a shame to see the crabbing dock go the way of the Tillamook Air Museum or the Bandon Cheese Factory.
The lose of the crabbing dock would be a heavy blow to the area economy of Douglas and Coos Counties. The deteriorating condition of the structural integrity of the crabbing dock at Winchester Bay is not an isolated instance. With the exception of Weber's Dock in Bandon, the condition of the crabbing docks are deteriorating with age.
The members of the CDAO are not into car washes or bake sales to raise money for maintaining our crabbing docks but we are into contributing to the cost of maintaining our crabbing docks by adding surcharge of several dollars to the shellfish license fee dedicated to maintaining our crabbing docks.
William Lackner for the CDAO

Is this the future of the Coast Guard Dock at Winchester Bay and the crabbing dock at Tillamook?
The disabled dock at the end of the road at the Northwest Natural Gas Plant has reached the end of its useful life in Yaquina Bay. Northwest Natural Gas is in the process of removing the now unsafe dock. Public access to the disabled dock has been restricted since 9/11 so the dock was not of much use to the disabled. The restricted access to the dock served as a symbol of success of the objectives of the terrorist.
