The policies and management practices of the DEQ and the ODA violate the public Trust. The DEQ was only able to do half the job of cleaning up the pollution at the former Fred Wahl Boat Works at the Port of Toledo. What was the impact of the pollution on the softshell clams downriver at Christer's Island? Who knows because the DEQ refuses to test the clams. The ODA fails to adequately warn the public to the danger posed by chronic sewage spills. The most egregious example exceeded the discharge of 500 thousand gallons of raw into the Umpqua River over a 3 year period. This failure occurred while the ODA was in the process failing to develop a program of reporting sewage spills on the Shellfish Hotline. The guys are so incompetent Governor should step in and fire the whole bunch. The lack of funding is the reason they claim. Well if that is the case then the State Legislature and the Governor are responsible for budget short falls. A short fall that short changes the public's safety. How many times do recreational shellfish harvesters take shellfish from tidal areas contaminated by raw sewage?
If humans were a fish species the ODFW could issue temporary closures for the taking of contaminated shellfish and crabs.

We (the CDAO) support the ethical values associated with a productive, clean environment. Anything less is unacceptable. Politicians and governmental employees bear a greater burden of responsibility than the rest of us because they have the power and authority to make the difference. When they fail to do so, it degrades the quality of the environment and the recreational values that we hold dear to our hearts. Bill
