Has Washington's Beltway Politicians thrown Oregon's Beach Monitioring Program Under The Bus?
YES, YES AND YES !!! HOW!!! Limit the funding for the EPA sponsored program and Double the workload.
With the dry weather going in the water is fairly safe, but once the rain returns to the Pacific Northwest the threat of contacting the diseases associated with contaminated beach water is a real possibility. All because the funding of Oregon's Beach Monitoring Program is a political football the Congress is kicking down the road.
Currently Oregon's Beach Monitoring Program is a part-time program only functional from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The current State and Federal government has been a state of gridlock far too long. It really does not matter what party they belong to because we need to elect a government that can do rather than can't do. Throw the bums out!!!!!!

Click on Oregon's Beach Monitoring Program to view the public meeting in Newport to discuss the EPA mandated changes to the Oregon's Beach Monitoring Program. The Oregon Beach Monitoring Program is an Oregon State Program that monitors the level of fecal bacteria on Oregon Beaches with history of chronic incidences of elevated fecal bacteria.
Visitors to Oregon Beaches should check the Oregon Beach Monitoring Program website for advisories listing the beaches with elevated levels of fecal bacteria prior to visiting the beach. Click on: Oregon's Beach Monitoring Program that lists the ocean beaches with chronic elevated levels of fecal bacteria; then click on, "View Current Beach Conditions". The beaches with elevated levels of fecal bacteria advisories are reported to the public on the internet through Oregon's Beach Monitoring program.
Even though the program is run by dedicated Oregon State Employees under directives from the EPA, The program is severally underfunded by Congress and is only operational from Memorial Day through Labor Day. In addition the EPA has lowered the threshold level of fecal bacteria requiring the Beach Monitoring Program to issue advisories warning the public about the rising level of fecal bacteria contaminating the ocean beaches without increasing the funding to accomplish the goals set by the EPA.
Underfunding of State Programs the ensure the public safety is a common excuse used by State Agencies to explain away their own incompetence. Congress is playing the citizens of the State against State employees and getting away with it by short changing us all. All of Oregon's State Agencies play this game. "Oh! it is not our fault or it is a natural occurring event in Nature. Well, so is dying a natural occurring event, that I am not buying into. Why should you!!!!
