We blamed our salmon problems on the sea lions are we going to kill the whales next? Who will ODFW & Pacific Fisheries Management Council blame next? We have the dumbest fishery leaders in Oregon's history. Management by greed, ignorance and influence monies. Good news we will all be alive when we catch the last salmon.
No salmon means more pressure on rock fish and surf perch.
Why are we harvesting the nearshore fish when they are having their babies?
Rock fish are slow growing 30 to 100 years old. More pressure because salmon fishery is collapsing is a disaster in the making. Rock fish guard their babies and their survival is dependent on this fact. Fishery production and survival needs to be a priority.
I talk with fisherman in Canada and they are also concerned about these same issues we are having.
If we continue not protecting the babies we will have less and less fish for people and the competing wildlife. Perhaps it is time to close the salmon season until a solution is found and manage the near shore fish for production instead of the current management by harvest limits.
Watch the nearshore catch limits go down and down. Something has to give. Who wants limits of one or 2 fish? This is where we are heading if we don't increase production.
