My best friend Ed Raper was a year older than I am and I will be 80 in April and he died when he was 33 years old.
Travel back to 1958 to the Atom Bomb test of Operation Hardtack a series of 33 nuclear detonations. Our ship was stationed 1450 yards from ground zero during one detonation and 2000 yards from another. Those two detonations launched our ship sending it airborne. Exposure to radiation is the reason for the deaths of 90 percent of the deaths of crew members serving about the squadron of destroyers participating in Operation Hardtack.
At the time, We my friend Ed Raper and I were waiting in line at Sick Call. Ed was standing in front of me. His body was covered with large sores. The Chief Corpsman examined the pustule sores covering Ed's body and said and I paraphrase that Ed's body was covered with boils. Well, I was standing at the open Dutch Door looking into the room and told the corpsman, "I've had lots of boils and those are not boils. They look like infected radiation burns to me."
The point: there is NO SAFE level of contamination for those exposed to nuclear radiation.
