Our email to State Rep Gomberg and Governor Brown follows:
Dear David, We object to the process where a foreign entity through their surrogate are allowed to condemn and take private property.
We strenuously object to the Citizens of Oregon pay for the dredging of Coos Bay for 60 million dollars.
These objections are in addition to our comments to the FERC.
Dear Army Corp of Engineers, The Headline in the World Newspaper States, “Corps holds open house for proposed dredging project”, however the rather than holding open house the Corp of Engineers should be cleaning house.
In the strongest terms, the Clam Diggers Association of Oregon objects to the continued assault on the ethical values associated with environmental productivity of Coos Bay that have produced grotesque appendages on our clams and oysters in addition to producing Dungeness crabs with genetic deficiencies such a weird color variations in association with other deformities. ODFW has in it possession photographic evidence to substantiate our claims but refuse to share the photographs with us claim they are the private property of their employees.
We strenuously object to dredging or otherwise disturbing the integrity of the substrate in the dredging area because of the unknown disposition of the tributyltin trapped in the substrate of Coos Bay. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality took numerous samples of tributyltin from the dredging spoils the Army Corp of Engineers dredged from the substrate of Coos Bay; however, none of the sediment samples were tested because the samples were destroyed in transit. It is our opinion that this was deliberate acts of sabotage.
We respectfully request that the Army Corp of Engineers contract with an independent firm to take test samples from dredging area and have the samples tested by an independent testing laboratory.
In addition we believe the administrative rules require ODFW to mitigate the loss of recreational opportunity. The Clam Diggers Association of Oregon believes that trading the public golf course for the loss of the recreational opportunity for the public good does not constitute mitigation. We request that the proponents of the project provide mitigation that is equal to the total loss of recreational opportunity. The value of the mitigation has been drastically understated by the proponents and the State of Oregon.
We do not believe that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will allow the current level of recreational opportunity of Coos Bay to continue. We believe that recreational boating will not be allowed during periods when the fully loaded ships carrying liquefied natural gas are underway in the shipping channels of Coos Bay. It is obvious that the loss of recreational opportunity is far greater than previously stated by proponents of the project and ODFW. In fact we believe that if the proposed project is allowed to go forward the fully operational shipping activities will destroy the local tourist based economy.
Thank you, Bill Lackner for the members of the Clam Diggers Association of Oregon
