Dear Rosie, I think you are confused the issue with the meeting several weeks ago over the issue of using bio-solids as fertilizer in the pastures of the farmers living near the city of Siletz. This practice is conceptually flawed and fatally flawed in practice. Applying bio-solids to the pastures anywhere in the Siletz River Valley will pollute the Siletz River. Do these people really believe that the bio-solids will remain static in place when faced with 60 plus inches of rainfall per year?
The 2.1 million gallon sewage spill is problematical for the ecology of the marine environment of Siletz Bay. I am the person who conducts the clam digging and crabbing clinics for Lincoln City. I cannot conduct these clinics without the ability to assure the participants that the clam and crabs are fit for human consumption. When you consider the other related issues of contaminates polluting Oregon's other bays it becomes increasing difficult to recommend consuming the shellfish harvested or farmed in our bays.
We would love the see our elected leaders become proactive and restore functioning ecological values to Oregon's rivers and bays. There are no alternatives.
Thank you for your consideration Bill Lackner

Hi William, thank you so much for including Sen. Roblan on this email communication. Wanted to clarify that the Department of Environmental Quality has looked into this issue and continues to work with local stakeholders. Recently, a town hall was held with constituents in the Lincoln City region.

Subject: Sewage Spill Siletz Bay
Dear Representative Gomberg, on the 18th of September a major sewage spill occurred in Schooner Creek just to the east of Siletz Bay. The detail of events are unclear but the results are will known. Siletz Bay was contaminated with approximately two million one hundred thousand gallons of raw sewage.
This occurrence is not only a huge disaster for the ecology of Siletz Bay it is threat to the economy of Lincoln City area.
We are asking the State to test the sediment and marine organisms for elevated levels of fecal coliform bacteria and the contaminates usually associated with exposure raw sewage and the marine environment.
We need to know when it is safe to consume clams, crabs and fish taken from Siletz Bay. We are especially interested in the near term verses the long term outlook for harvesting these marine species from Siletz Bay.
Thank you for your consideration, Bill Lackner for the members of the Clam Diggers Association of Oregon.
