My friends and others, I am sharing my thoughts about the environmental terrorism perpetrated by the state of Oregon and the Army Corp of Engineers at the request of the Federal authorities that are responsible for declining fish runs in the Pacific Northwest.
The following quote is from Wikipedia, "The Malheur River watershed was once a major spawning ground for anadromous fish such as salmon and other fish species. In the early 20th century a number of dams on the Snake River blocked fish migration.[3] " The same quote can be used to describe most rivers of the Columbia and Snake River Basins.
The information was used to Produce a narration on the recreational opportunities available in the Snake River Basin of Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
We believe that if one considers the impact that Dams have had on the decline of salmonids and sturgeon the Dams need to be removed or the manner in which the function modified to allow the passage of fish. There are no alternatives. Anything less is environmental terrorism.
Full quote of Wikipedia statement from their website: "Malheur River (local pronunciation: "MAL-hyure") is a 190-mile-long (306 km)[4] tributary of the Snake River in eastern Oregon in the United States. It drains a high desert area, between the Harney Basin and the Blue Mountains and the Snake River.
Despite the similarity of name, the river does not flow into nearby Malheur Lake, which is located in the enclosed Harney Basin southwest of the watershed of the river. When water levels were higher, Malheur Lake would drain into the Malheur River. The Malheur River watershed was once a major spawning ground for anadromous fish such as salmon. In the early 20th century a number of dams on the Snake River blocked fish migration.[3] "

Our members continue to offer suggestion to enhance our recreational experience, but the State refuses to engage!!! There are solutions to the problems facing migrating fish.
Thank you for your consideration, Bill Lackner for the Members of the Clam Diggers Association of Oregon.
