Senate Bill 792 ODFW selling our information
Testimony is on behalf of: Clam Diggers Association of Oregon
Measure: SB 792
Committee: Senate Committee On Natural Resources and Wildfire Recovery
Position on this Bill: support
Testimony:
Senate Bill 792
The Clam Diggers Association of Oregon opposes ODFW’s current practice of disclosing personal information that includes ages, sex, phone and address information for the following reasons:
1. We believe disclosing children’s information is an obvious safety concern. The current bill as written based on age, discriminates because it is based on age. If ODFW did a licensee survey today and asked if personal information should be disclosed I suspect the overwhelming majority would say no.
2. The Attorney General in Alaska wrote me a letter about why Alaska Fish and Game does not sell or provide personal information. He said this policy protects people from being targeted from groups like PETA.
3. Releasing personal information contributes to the ever increasing unwanted spam phone calls.
Oregon Constitution
Section 9. Unreasonable searches or seizures. No law shall violate the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable search, or seizure; and no warrant shall issue but upon probable cause, supported by oath, or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the person or thing to be seized.
We support the current law being proposed and question if the practice of not disclosing should be afforded to all citizens? At the very least we should have the right to opt out at the time of purchase.
Sincerely,
Chuck Erickson Director CDAO
