The entire Northwest depends on tourism. The Sport Fisheries are paying the bills through licenses and 10% Federal fishing excise taxes. How many sport fishermen buy RVs, boats, trailers and motors and spend their hard earned money?
The commercial salmon troll fishery needs to be closed permanently. There is not enough salmon and everyone knows it. This process should be about commerce and not about who is going to catch the last fish. Our current method of trading fish stocks like Wall Street trades means less and fewer fish everyone.
Our coho salmon will never recover because of the current mismanagement as dead loss bi-catch. It is a tragedy that ODFW managers will not stop the needless trapping of keystone species needed for healthy coho self-sustaining fisheries. We hear all this talk about global warming while ignoring wetlands that cool and feed our fisheries. ODFW’s Biologist testified that there were no studies that keystone species support healthy fisheries. Four biologists were there and no one knew? I had to mail them a copy of the study that was done in Washington State. I am not a biologist all I did was use google and beavers matter.
ODFW solution: Keep doing the same thing (hatcheries) and expect different results. Isn’t this the definition of insanity? Scoop up all the bait fish to make fish and cat food. We reap what we sow.
We need leaders who use our archaic prison system labor to restore and rebuild sustainable watersheds. Let them actually repay society. Use the homeless. Let nature do her work.We talk global warming and we still use our rivers as toilets for our sewers and polluted storm waters.
