What happens when fishery managers are more concerned with harvesting than preserving our fisheries for future generations? The answer is simple. They disappear like all the other species have from greed and our mismanaged ecosystem. Logging, agriculture and power companies are destroying habitat that was once abundant only a few hundred years ago.
What I find more disturbing is why we opened the ocean for salmon in the first place. Read my comments to PFMC regarding ALL Salmon Seasons. By early March, it was obvious the entire coast of Oregon was headed for a severe drought. Threatened coastal coho in Oregon has had almost zero enforcement for decades. Our coho stocks are like a neglected step-child and the only value is a bi-catch mortality so ODFW can run their troll fishery. It is also obvious to this fisherman the coho are also in the same situation as the Chinook.
I can only conclude that industry has their people inside NOAA and PFMC and greed is the science these people know.
We are one of the last tackle manufacturers in Oregon. We have invested thousands having injection molds made here in the Northwest. We buy most of our supplies in the USA. I understand more than most the value of a salmon economy. The Sports group is paying all the bills through license fees and federal fishing excise tax, and we have no voice. PFMC and their lifetime advisory board appointments is not democracy.
The Orca are a keystone species and for the life of me why are we ignoring their warning? The coastal marine fishery should have been closed years ago. The coho bi-catch dead loss is a disgrace. If we can’t have a season with this kind of immoral waste the fishery should not be opened.
We want real fish managers instead of Wall Street management that makes the problem worse and longer lasting. We want beaver trapping stopped and wetlands restored. We want dams with no fish ladders removed. The Snake River Dams and John Day Dam should be removed.
Releasing zillions of hatchery smolts in downturn ocean years is reckless and will make all the salmon starve. Commercial fishing sardine, herring and anchovy stocks is a big problem when it is done to a level where there is no fish to be caught.
The last user group allowed to fish should be Native Americans because they seem to care about our fish and habitat. We need more Native Americans in charge at NOAA & PFMC.
