Subam harvest we request the following:
1. Post signs, warning clam diggers against harvesting clams from the tidal areas associated with sewage outfalls (mixing zones) located in many of Oregon's bays. Current once a month testing by sewage plants is not adequate to ensure public safety.
2. Initiate health warnings on the shellfish safety hotline during reported sewage spills. All sewage spills are currently reported to Oregon Emergency Response System: 1-800-452-0311. The health concerns related to pathogens will only increase from global warming.
3. Investigate the safety issues of harvesting shellfish in the proximity of our Industrial marinas and proposed super fund clean up areas.
Area of concern:
A. Tidal flats at the Charleston boat basin
B. Tidal flats associated with Troller Street and Kelly Point.
4. We also request that ODFW implement a shellfish advisory program like the one implemented by Washington State during coastal heat waves. This public safety information could be added to our shellfish safety hotline.
The recent 1.3 million dollars ODFW received for coastal global warming could be used in part for global warming public safety in our estuaries for clam diggers, crabbers and fishermen. Steps we take today will pay dividends during our challenging, changing world in our coastal communities.
In the ideal world we should consolidate all public safety warnings into one place “Shellfish Safety Hotline.” One call location for biotoxins, shellfish heat warnings and sewage spills. If this issue needs to be brought to the commission for their approval, can you send us information on that process. Thank you for your consideration and your service to the State of Oregon.
Sincerely,
Bill Lackner President CDAO
